Computational Linguistics and Linguistic Theory

چکیده
The present paper is an attempt to justify and explain the direction of present research in Ottawa (Carleton University and also University of Ottawa) on Computational manipulation of speech. Our actual realizations are not necessarily original; rather, we are trying to make use of the findings of other workers, assembling them, however, in a different way, on the basis of a novel conception of linguistic organization.

The Automatic Deduction of Classi catorySystems from Linguistic Theories ( Abridged ) ? Paul
Classifying linguistic objects is a widespread and important linguistic task, and computational linguistics often requires the deduction of a classiicatory system from a general linguistic theory. Since hand deducing a classiicatory system may consume much eeort and introduce errors, a device that eeectively deduces accurate classiicatory systems from general linguistic theories would beneet co...

متن کاملLinguistic Issues in Language Technology LiLT
In this paper, we overview the ways in which computational methods can serve the goals of analysis and theory development in linguistics, and encourage the reader to become involved in the emerging cyberinfrastructure for linguistics. We survey examples from diverse subfields of how computational methods are already being used, describe the current state of the art in cyberinfrastructure for li...
متن کاملLinguistics and Information Science: a Postscript
The object of Linguistics and Information Science (Sparck Jones and Kay, 1973) was to show how far the suppposedly natural connection between linguistics and information science existed in practice. We surveyed linguistic theory and computational linguistics to identify approaches potentially applicable to information science, and to information, i.e., document, retrieval in particular; and we ...
متن کاملA Formal Lexicon in the Meaning-Text Theory (or How to Do Lexica with Words)
The goal of this paper is to present a particular type of lexicon, elaborated within a formal theory of natural language called Meaning-Text Theory (MTT). This theory puts strong emphasis on the development of highly structured lexica. Computational linguistics does of course recognize the importance of the lexicon in language processing. However, MTT probably goes further in this direction tha...
متن کاملGrammar and Nlp
Inasmuch as computational models include mathematical linguistic theory and stategies for the use of this theory, Grammar plays a role in computational linguistics. Principle-based parsers (Berwick l991, and related works) include the axiomatization of our knowledge of language, through sets of rules or principles, and control strategies representing our use of this knowledge. Interestingly, di...
